As you get older, testosterone therapy may sound promising. But there are many misconceptions about what treatment can and can’t do for you.

Testosterone therapy may seem like the ideal antiaging formula. However, the health benefits of testosterone therapy for age-related testosterone decline are unclear.

What is testosterone?

Testosterone is a hormone that is produced primarily in the testicles. In men, testosterone helps maintain the following:

  • bone density
  • fat distribution
  • muscle mass and strength
  • facial and body hair

  • sperm production

What happens to testosterone levels as we age?

Testosterone levels usually peak during adolescence and early adulthood. As you get older, your testosterone levels decrease, usually around 1% per year after age 30 or 40. Older men must determine whether low testosterone levels are due to normal ageing or disease (hypogonadism).

Hypogonadism inhibits the ability to produce normal amounts of testosterone because of problems with the testes or the pituitary gland that controls the testes. Testosterone replacement therapy, given as an injection, tablet, patch, or gel, can improve signs and symptoms of low testosterone in men.

Should You Consult Your Doctor About Testosterone Therapy?

If you’re wondering whether testosterone therapy might be right for you, talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits. Your doctor will likely measure your testosterone levels twice before recommending testosterone therapy.

It is not recommended to treat normal ageing with testosterone therapy. Suppose you don’t have a medical condition causing low testosterone levels. Do declining testosterone levels naturally cause signs and symptoms of ageing?

Not necessarily. Men can have many signs and symptoms as they age. Some of those associated with lower testosterone levels may include the following:

Some of these signs and symptoms may be caused by other factors, such as medication side effects, obstructive sleep apnea, thyroid problems, diabetes, and depression. This condition can also cause low testosterone levels, so that treatment can cause increased testosterone levels.
